Canada Day blast
Fireworks illuminate the night sky in Steinbach on Wednesday as part of the city’s Canada Day celebrations. The 12-minute display was watched by thousands of spectators at various locations in the city, many picking their spots and setting up lawn chairs hours in advance of the pyrotechnic show launched from a field just west of the RCMP detachment. |

ER service back in Vita
Vita hospital reopened its emergency room on Monday after being closed for the past month due to a physician shortage. Two new doctors have been hired. Though the regional health authority prefers to have three physicians to handle the ER duties, the two new staff will share the responsibility until October when the RHA expects another doctor will also be available to begin work.
City takes pounding over animal control
The City of Steinbach was at the centre of media controversy this week over its practice of shooting unclaimed dogs at the city pound. Ironically, city council was scheduled to review the city’s animal control bylaw on Tuesday. While possible changes were discuss and could come in a revised bylaw later this year, no one suggested specific changes to the current method of euthanasia, which is approved by the Canadian Council for Animal Care.
Three charged in armed robbery
19-year-old Walther Beitenger of Steinbach and two city youths have been charged in connection with a recent armed robbery. On June 24 a young man entered 1st Choice Convenience on Main Street armed with a baseball bat, his face masked by a bandana. After fleeing the scene with hundreds of dollars in cash, the suspect was caught by some vigilant local residents before being taken in by the RCMP.

Weather woes continue as
rain, wind hit region
Between four and five inches of rain fell in Landmark on the weekend, causing ditches to fill and overflow. One of the flood areas was at the corner of provincial roads 206 and 210 where water crept almost the the doors of the former McNaught building, now site of Heartland Community Church. Because much of the rain fell in a relatively short period of time (Friday to Saturday night), drainage ditches could not deal with it. |
